Is Your Network Physically Secure?
TuesdayApr 7, 2009
With PCI, SOX and HIPAA becoming a requirement for many companies, network security has become a big concern. But are you considering physical security? Regardless of the number of firewalls, password complexity, virus and patch management in place, if someone can gain physical access to your equipment all bets are off.
Below are a few tips to keeping your Information Technology Infrastructure physically secure.
Keep your core infrastructure (servers, routers, switches and firewalls) in a locked room. If someone is able to physically access to your office, maybe due to a door being unlocked, they shouldn’t be able to access your equipment.
Managed Switches can provide security features that won’t allow unauthorized computers to connect to network jacks in common areas such as cubicle space or conference rooms.
Use PC/Laptop cable locks to secure your equipment in open spaces.
Look at purchasing IP Surveillance Cameras. They are relatively inexpensive and give you the ability to view your office remotely after hours or while on vacation.
Configure Network Management software to alert you when system go off-line. If someone gains physical access and brings the system down to access it, you will be notified. Check your IP Surveillance Cameras for activity in your office.
